Bills QB Josh Allen ties Hall of Famer OJ Simpson for 2nd most rushing TDs in franchise history.

Allen’s making sure his name is written on all the pages in the Bills’ record books

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen added another rushing touchdown to his total, bringing his career count to 57. With this touchdown, he ties Hall of Fame running back O.J. Simpson for the second-most rushing touchdowns in franchise history.

Allen’s most recent touchdown came with two minutes remaining in the first half, putting the Bills ahead of the Indianapolis Colts 17-13.

Allen has moved into the second-place tie in the Bills’ record books in his seventh season in the NFL. For Simpson, who was drafted by Buffalo in 1969, it took nine seasons to amass 57 touchdowns.

Another Hall of Fame running back, Thurman Thomas, currently holds the top spot on the Bills’ all-time rushing touchdown list. Thomas, who played for Buffalo for 12 seasons after being drafted in 1988, scored 65 rushing touchdowns. With Allen just eight touchdowns behind Thomas, it’s a record that could very well change hands before the end of 2025.

Allen has never scored fewer than six rushing touchdowns in a season and has hit 8 or more in four of his last six campaigns. Last season, the Bills’ quarterback rushed for 15 touchdowns. By comparison, O.J. Simpson had his best season in 1975, scoring 16 rushing touchdowns in his seventh year with Buffalo.

Allen’s 57th career rushing touchdown, which is his fourth of the current season, comes with several games still to be played. If he maintains his current pace, he’s on track for another season with at least 8 touchdowns. Should that happen, he would enter the 2025 season needing just four more rushing touchdowns to pass Thurman Thomas and claim the top spot in franchise history.

Not all of Allen’s rushing touchdowns have come from quarterback sneaks. Since 2021, the Bills’ quarterback has scored 6 touchdowns from outside the 10-yard line. Over the past three seasons, no other quarterback has more from that distance, and only seven running backs have matched or exceeded that total.

In fact, Allen has had relatively few goal-line touchdowns during this period. He didn’t even make the NFL leaderboard for touchdowns scored from the 1-yard line.

During the 2023 season, Allen ran for a score 15 times – and only eight of those runs started inside the 5-yard line.

Although postseason stats don’t officially count, Allen showcased his ability to score from anywhere during the Bills’ wild-card weekend victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, running more than half the field for a touchdown. This play highlighted his dynamic rushing ability.
Josh Allen is etching his name into the Bills’ and NFL record books. The countdown to first place is officially on—57 touchdowns down, just eight to go.
