New Orleans Saints Mourns the Death of One of their Prolific and well known Crew Member

The New Orleans Saints are deeply saddened by the passing of Ken Saer, the team’s first physician and orthopedist. Dr. Saer, who became part of the franchise at its founding in 1967, served in this role for 24 years. He passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, at the age of 94.

“Dr. Saer truly embodied the spirit and resilience that characterize both our city and our organization,” said Saints Owner Gayle Benson. “His unwavering dedication to our players, combined with his groundbreaking work as our first team physician and orthopedist, set the standard for exceptional care. His legacy will always be a part of the Saints family, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Dr. Saer earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane University, where he also served as a faculty member. He was a trailblazer in the field of sports medicine and earned national respect for his contributions. Dr. Saer was also a founding member of the AFL-NFL Professional Football Trainers and Physicians Association, now known as the National Football League Physicians Society (NFLPS).

The NFLPS plays a vital role in advancing technology and instituting rule changes to improve responses to on-field injuries. Additionally, Dr. Saer was a member of Southern Orthopedic Specialists, an organization that has provided high-quality orthopedic care to the citizens of New Orleans and the Gulf South region for over 70 years.

Dr. Saer is survived by his wife, Meredith, two sons, Robert and John, three daughters, Shaun, Margaret, and Penny, two stepsons, Robert and Mitchum, a stepdaughter, Melanie, and 14 grandchildren. A Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 6367 St. Charles Ave., with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
