As the New York Yankees adjust to life without outfielder Juan Soto, general manager Brian Cashman faces the challenge of filling two infield positions. One potential solution could involve a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Cubs for outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger and second baseman Nico Hoerner.
The Yankees are reportedly in active trade talks with the Cubs regarding Bellinger, although money remains a key obstacle. Bellinger, the 2019 National League MVP, is owed $52.5 million through 2026 unless he opts out after next season, with a $27.5 million salary in 2025. Bellinger would be a good fit for the Yankees at first base, while Hoerner, a 2023 Gold Glove winner, could replace Gleyber Torres at second base, as Torres is a free agent.
Randy Miller of NJ.com suggests that offering starting pitcher Marcus Stroman and pitching prospect Will Warren might be enough to secure both players. Miller notes that while Bellinger is not quite the same as his 47-homer, MVP-winning 2019 season, he still hits 25-30 home runs, avoids striking out, and plays excellent defense. Hoerner, though lacking power, is a solid right-handed hitter with a .260 average, steals 30-40 bases, and excels defensively at second base, providing a significant upgrade over Torres.
This trade could strengthen the Yankees’ infield without breaking the bank, although third base remains a question mark. With Aaron Judge returning to right field in 2025, Jazz Chisholm Jr., who took over third base after the trade deadline, might shift to center field.
