Approved in: Reds Lands Home Another Bridged Deal of a Considered Threat Star Player From A Good Team

The Cincinnati Reds have had a quiet offseason, with few moves made, particularly in terms of big league signings. However, yesterday they made a noteworthy move by claiming right-handed reliever Roansy Contreras from the Texas Rangers. This adds to their relatively modest activity in free agency, where they have not made any significant big league contracts and have barely signed anyone to minor league deals over the past two months.

On a smaller scale, the Reds added Lenny Torres, a right-handed pitcher, to their organization. Torres, a former Cleveland draft pick, was selected in the 2018 MLB Draft as the 41st overall pick. However, his career has been marked by setbacks, including Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss the 2019 season and the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season.

Torres made his return to the mound in 2021, but struggled with control issues, posting a 6.29 ERA in Low-A. In 2022, he moved to the bullpen, where his control problems continued. In 2024, Torres showed significant progress, especially in his control. Pitching for Double-A Akron, he lowered his walk rate, issuing just 24 walks over 51.2 innings, a sharp improvement. This allowed him to post an impressive 2.26 ERA. He also struck out 63 hitters, further showcasing his potential.

His fastball sits in the mid-90s, and he has touched 99 mph. He also mixes in a mid-80s breaking ball. Though Torres is currently a minor league signing and is unlikely to start spring training in the big leagues, his improved control and strong pitches make him an intriguing prospect for the Reds. If he can continue to keep the walks under control, his fastball and breaking ball could allow him to reach the majors in the future.
