Virginia Tech Lands Home Another Commitment Of A top Talented Player From An Outstanding Team.

There was some Virginia Tech football news around the holiday.

Despite the fact that the holiday season is in full swing, college football news never stops. That is where we are right now with the transfer portal, commitments, and athletes declaring for the NFL Draft in April in Green Bay. This installment of Virginia Tech football news will begin at the transfer portal.

Keli Lawson commits to Big 12 school

Georgia Tech v Virginia Tech

When the transfer portal officially opened a few weeks ago, fewer Hokies entered compared to last season, when head coach Brent Pry was able to retain many players. This year, a few Virginia Tech players with remaining eligibility joined the portal, and they are gradually finding new teams. One such case occurred on Christmas Eve.

Linebacker Keli Lawson entered the portal and committed to Central Florida in the Big 12 on Tuesday night. Last season, former Hokies cornerback Derrick Canteen also transferred to a Big 12 school, Cincinnati.

Josh Fuga declares for NFL Draft

After Virginia Tech secured bowl eligibility with a win over Virginia last season, defensive lineman Josh Fuga was among several players on both sides of the ball who announced their return for 2024. This season, the 6-foot-2, 313-pound Woodbridge native recorded 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks in his final year at Virginia Tech.

On Wednesday, Fuga announced via his X account that he is declaring for the NFL Draft, concluding his time as a Hokie. Throughout his career, he was a solid contributor, tallying 70 tackles and four sacks. This season, he was part of a defensive line that often gave opposing offenses significant challenges.

Bowl game eight days away

With Christmas now behind them, Virginia Tech is set to travel to Charlotte in a few days for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Minnesota. The Hokies’ roster will look quite different from the one that defeated Virginia on Thanksgiving weekend, but this final game presents an important opportunity to see some of the younger players in action, which is crucial for the future of the program.
