The Detroit Lions have released veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander from their active roster, though they hope to re-sign him to their practice squad. Despite a string of injuries to their linebacker group, Alexander has been phased out of the lineup in recent weeks.
Alexander was initially signed by the Lions off the Denver Broncos’ practice squad to help bolster their linebacker depth amid injuries. With over a decade of experience in the NFL, Alexander has been a valuable addition for teams in need of veteran leadership.
Prior to joining the Lions, Alexander had a brief stint with the Broncos, where he played in three games and made the most of his opportunities after the team faced linebacker injuries. He registered three tackles and forced one fumble during his time with Denver.
Before his time with the Broncos, Alexander played for multiple teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent the 2022 season with the Steelers, where he started at linebacker following an injury to Cole Holcomb. However, Alexander himself suffered a season-ending Achilles tear against the Green Bay Packers, sidelining him for the remainder of the year.
After recovering from his injury, Alexander worked out for several teams before being signed by the Broncos earlier this year. His extensive NFL experience and leadership make him a strong candidate for a practice squad role as the Lions look to maintain depth in their linebacker corps.
