The Hokies picked up their first transfer portal addition along the offensive line for 2025.
Virginia Tech’s Boxing Day kicked off with a bang as the Hokies secured a commitment from Isaiah Cash, a defensive back transferring from Sam Houston, who announced his decision on social media.
Cash, who chose the Hokies over finalists Houston and USC, had interest from several other programs, including Ole Miss, Wisconsin, and Georgia Tech. His commitment marks the eighth transfer for Virginia Tech this offseason, with Cash becoming the fifth defensive back added to the roster. Other recent DB additions include Clemson safety Sherrod Covil Jr., ECU cornerback Isaiah Brown-Murray, Rice safety Tyson Flowers, and Wingate DB Joseph Reddish. Cash, who has one year of eligibility remaining, is expected to make an immediate impact.
After transferring from Houston Christian, Cash had a standout season at Sam Houston, posting 67 tackles (two for loss), two interceptions, and 10 pass breakups. He earned a 77.4 season grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF), missed only 3.6% of his tackle attempts, and allowed just 26 receptions for 231 yards on 49 targets. Those impressive stats should excite Hokie fans, particularly for a safety with a well-rounded skill set.
Cash brings more than just safety experience to the table. He has extensive experience at the nickel position, which has become a priority for the Hokies with Dorian Strong moving on to the NFL. Over his career, Cash has played 803 snaps in the slot, including 149 this past season at Sam Houston, according to PFF. His versatility gives Virginia Tech flexibility in the defensive backfield.
With Cash’s commitment, it’s likely that the Hokies are done adding transfer defensive backs—at least those with just one year of eligibility remaining. The safety depth chart has been completely revamped, with Cash, Covil, and Flowers joining Quentin Reddish to form a strong two-deep for next season. Braylon Johnson and Sheldon Robinson could also factor into the mix, making this the deepest safety room Virginia Tech has had under Brent Pry.
Though the safety positions appear set, Cash also addresses the Hokies’ nickel needs, and there’s still a chance the team could target a cornerback with nickel experience to add even more versatility. Additionally, Virginia Tech is still in the hunt for New Mexico safety Christian Ellis, so it’s possible the Hokies may not be finished adding to the defensive backfield just yet.
