Major Breaking: Miami Drops Another Heartbreaker to Virginia Tech

The University of Miami women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss to Virginia Tech (10-6, 1-2) on Sunday afternoon, falling 68-64.

The Hurricanes (11-4, 1-3) controlled the game for nearly 33 minutes but saw a 12-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter. The Hokies finished strong, closing the game with a 21-5 run to claim the win.

Miami showcased a well-rounded offensive effort, with six players scoring at least five points, and three reaching double figures. The team shot 44.6 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line, while holding Virginia Tech to just 38.2 percent shooting. However, the Hokies excelled from beyond the arc, hitting 37.9 percent of their three-point attempts.

Cameron Williams led Miami with a double-double, posting 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmyne Roberts added 13 points, and Haley Cavinder contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists. Hanna Cavinder chipped in nine points, and freshman Leah Harmon scored six points off the bench.

Miami opened the game with a 6-0 lead, hitting three of their first four shots. The Hokies fought back, tying the game at 10 with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Virginia Tech finished the quarter ahead 16-15 after outscoring the Canes 6-5 in the final minutes. The teams entered halftime tied at 28.

The Canes came out strong in the third quarter, going on a 14-2 run to take a 42-30 lead at 4:16. They maintained a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final period, Miami extended their advantage to 59-47 with a quick 8-3 run, but Virginia Tech responded, taking a one-point lead with 1:03 left. Miami tied the game with a free throw with 41 seconds to go, but the Hokies made two free throws to retake the lead with 13 seconds remaining. Miami missed a potential game-tying shot, and Virginia Tech sealed the win with two more free throws.

The Canes will return to action next Sunday, January 12, traveling to Syracuse to face the Orange at 6 p.m.
