The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to require a new starting quarterback for the upcoming season, but they may have already ruled out one experienced candidate.
The Steelers began the season strong with Justin Fields at quarterback, holding the fort until Russell Wilson returned. However, the team stumbled late in the season, blowing their lead in the AFC North. They lost their final four regular-season games and were eliminated from the playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round.
Wilson’s future with the Pittsburgh Steelers is uncertain, sparking speculation that New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers could be a possible replacement.
However, the Steelers have reportedly made a definitive decision regarding Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 season, according to a team insider this week.
Reporter Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stated during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show this week, “I can tell you that it won’t be Aaron Rodgers. They have no interest in doing that.”
The Steelers have yet to decide on bringing Russell Wilson back for another season. This week, the team signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson. Head coach Mike Tomlin emphasized that no quarterbacks are currently set to return for the 2025 season.
“We don’t have a quarterback under contract,” head coach Mike Tomlin stated. “We are certainly open to considering those guys, but we have a lot of work ahead of us.” Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers has not disclosed his plans for next season, noting that his future with the Jets depends on the team’s next head coach and general manager.
