The Buffalo Bills are just two wins away from securing a Super Bowl victory, and this may be their final opportunity to achieve that long-awaited goal with a player who has already reached the pinnacle twice. Their journey to the AFC championship game, marking their first appearance since 2020, has come as somewhat of a surprise, especially given the team underwent a partial rebuild over the past year due to financial constraints.
This roster change has likely resulted in fewer resources surrounding star quarterback Josh Allen, yet the team has still managed to reach the peak of success in his era by advancing to a second AFC championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
This achievement is not only thrilling for the Buffalo Bills organization and their fans in the short term, but it also bodes well for the team’s future as it continues to adjust its roster. Part of this ongoing transition may involve Von Miller, the two-time Super Bowl champion and seven-time All-Pro edge rusher.
According to Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department, Miller is considered the most likely salary cap casualty for the Bills heading into the offseason due to his $120 million contract, which extends through 2027. While Miller was more productive in 2024 than in 2023, with six sacks and playing 33% of the defensive snaps, his $23.8 million cap hit makes it difficult for the team to justify keeping him.
Bleacher Report noted on January 20 that the Bills could clear $8.4 million in cap space if they release him before June 1, offering some early relief, or up to $17.4 million if they wait until after June 1 or give him that designation. Miller, who won Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos in 2015 and the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, has accumulated 129.5 regular-season sacks in his 13-year NFL career. However, over the last three years with the Bills, he has recorded just 14 sacks in 36 games, including none in 2023.
