On Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills announced they had re-signed quarterback Shane Buechele to a one-year contract through the team’s official X account (formerly known as Twitter). Buechele, 27, spent the 2024 season on injured reserve after suffering a neck injury during the preseason.
Although Buechele has yet to appear in an NFL regular season game, his college career showcases impressive stats. Over his time with the Texas Longhorns and SMU Mustangs, he passed for 11,660 yards, 87 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions, completing 63.1% of his passes. Buechele also demonstrated mobility, rushing for 478 yards and 8 touchdowns across 56 games. His standout 2019 season at SMU, where he threw for 3,929 yards and 34 touchdowns, kept him on the radar of NFL teams.
The Bills are bolstering their quarterback depth, aware that Josh Allen can’t carry the load alone. Allen played at an MVP level during the 2024 season, throwing for 237 yards, completing nearly 65% of his passes (22/34), and tossing two touchdowns in the AFC Championship Game. Despite his stellar performance, the Bills are still striving for their first Super Bowl appearance.
In addition to Buechele’s return, the Bills also signed tight end Zach Davidson to a reserve/future contract. Davidson, who spent last season on the practice squad, now has the opportunity to compete for a roster spot during the offseason and training camp.
