Major Breaking: Giants land ex-Yankees reliever in free agency

The Giants are taking a flier on a veteran who last pitched in 2022.

The San Francisco Giants are taking a low-risk chance on a former Yankees reliever as they look to reinforce their bullpen following a disappointing 80-82 finish in 2024. With their pitching staff struggling and the recent trade of veteran reliever Taylor Rogers to the Reds, the Giants have signed right-hander Lou Trivino to a minor-league deal, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray. The contract includes an invite to spring training.

Trivino began his career with the Oakland Athletics before being traded to the Yankees at the 2022 deadline. He performed well in New York, posting a stellar 1.66 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 21.2 innings—an impressive turnaround from the 6.47 ERA he had with the A’s earlier that season.

Unfortunately, Trivino’s momentum was derailed by an elbow injury in spring training before the 2023 season. After an initial UCL strain and a setback during rehab, he ultimately underwent Tommy John surgery, costing him the entire year.

Now healthy, Trivino will look to bounce back with the Giants and earn a spot in their bullpen. If he can return to his pre-injury form, he could be a valuable addition to San Francisco’s pitching staff.
