Clemson is going all out to revamp its defense this offseason, and its latest strategic move is bringing in Mike Houston as a defensive analyst.
This hiring, reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, is a significant boost for the Tigers, given Houston’s impressive track record and wealth of experience
A native of North Carolina, the 53-year-old Mike Houston has deep coaching roots in the state. His career spans over two decades, beginning with 11 years in high school coaching (1994-2005).
Houston then transitioned to college coaching, holding various roles including head coach at Brevard (2006) and defensive coordinator (2007-2010) and head coach (2011-2013) at Lenoir-Rhyne.
Mike Houston’s coaching career spans over two decades, with notable stints as head coach at The Citadel (2014-2015), James Madison (2016-2017), and East Carolina (2018-2024). His achievements include leading James Madison to the 2016 FCS National Championship and accumulating an overall 106-62 record as a college head coach.
Houston joins Clemson as a defensive analyst, bringing valuable expertise to the coaching staff. Although he won’t be involved in recruiting, game-day coaching, or press box duties, his insight will be invaluable.
Clemson’s defensive overhaul continues, with significant additions including:
– Defensive coordinator Tom Allen from Penn State
– First-ever defensive transfers in the Dabo Swinney era
– Four highly touted high school defensive recruits, including 5-star defensive tackle Amare Adams and 4-star edge rusher Ari Watford
With Houston on board, Clemson aims to revive its elite defensive performance next season.
