The Nationals top pitching prospect is on the shelf until at least May
The arrival of pitchers and catchers signifies the start of a new season, but it also brings the unfortunate reveal of injuries. For the Nationals, their top pitching prospect, Travis Sykora, will be sidelined.
General Manager Mike Rizzo confirmed that the 20-year-old right-hander will be out until at least May due to a hip injury. While it’s not an arm issue, it’s still disappointing for Sykora, a rising star in the Nationals’ system. He had been expected to join the team in West Palm Beach alongside fellow pitching prospect Jarlin Susana.
After being selected in the third round of the 2023 draft, Sykora had a stellar 2024 season. Over 85 innings at Low-A, he posted a 2.33 ERA and struck out 129 batters. 2025 was expected to be the year he really began to climb the minor league ranks.

Though his development is now on hold, his trajectory could still stay intact. Once healthy, Sykora is expected to start at High-A Wilmington. Unless there are further setbacks, this injury shouldn’t significantly disrupt his plans. However, the Nationals will need to keep a closer eye on his health. Sykora’s unorthodox delivery always carried some injury risk, but at least his arm is unaffected.
Yeah, hopefully he bounces back strong! If he picks up where he left off, it could be a huge year for him. A full recovery and a smooth transition to High-A Wilmington could really accelerate his rise through the minors. Fingers crossed he’s back to dominating hitters like he did last season!
