If the Chicago Cubs are planning to make a big move in the next month, it could take several forms. Recently, the front office has expressed interest in adding a starting pitcher, but if a superstar hitter becomes available, pursuing that player wouldn’t be a bad move either.
This winter, the Cubs already made a significant acquisition by trading for Kyle Tucker, who is arguably one of the top five hitters in Major League Baseball. Still, last season, the Cubs’ offense ranked among the bottom half in nearly every key hitting category, which could be a concern for a team aiming to improve in 2025.
Even though the Cubs’ pitching staff appears elite on paper, a lackluster offense could prevent them from making real progress in the coming year.
This is where someone like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could come into play. While the Toronto Blue Jays have not shown much interest in trading him yet, MLB insiders from The Athletic recently named him one of the most likely players to be moved during spring training.
Should the Blue Jays decide to entertain offers, acquiring the right-handed slugger would give the Cubs a significant boost. With Guerrero in the lineup, they might even become the favorites in the National League Central—a title some already envision for them. The Dominican Republic native has consistently been a top-tier hitter throughout his career, as evidenced by his 30 home runs and .940 OPS in 2024.
