Giants Have Major Issues Concerning Father’s Influence On Top Quarterback’s Decision On Exiting From Team

The New York Giants have had their sights on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders for a while. They have scouted him multiple times, with general manager Joe Schoen personally attending several Colorado games and practices throughout the 2024 season.

Although many mock drafts project the Giants to select Shedeur Sanders with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft if given the chance, a recent report suggests they may still be undecided. There are concerns about the potential influence of Shedeur’s father, Deion Sanders, and the intense spotlight their presence could bring to New York.

Giants are intrigued by Shedeur Sanders, but have a growing “concern”

According to Paul Schwartz of The New York Post, the Giants are “intrigued” by Shedeur Sanders but have some concerns.

“There’s no doubt the Giants have interest in Shedeur Sanders,” Schwartz reported. “They plan to examine the dynamic with his well-known father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. One concern is that Shedeur has been coached by his father since high school. The Giants have also witnessed the highly publicized, video-driven environment at Colorado and the intense spotlight that both father and son appear to embrace.”

Shedeur Sanders was spotted playing catch in the streets of New York City with Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers earlier this offseason. Additionally, Colorado, known for documenting nearly everything, shared videos showing members of the Giants’ front office attending several of their private practices.

Will Deion Sanders’s involvement turn off the Giants?

These behind-the-scenes videos are entertaining for fans, but they could also bring an unwanted media spectacle to New York. Deion and Shedeur Sanders share a unique dynamic—not just as father and son but also as coach and quarterback. Since Deion has coached Shedeur for essentially his entire life, some question how he will respond to guidance from an outside voice at the NFL level. Deion’s influence over Shedeur is undeniable and well-earned, but it has raised concerns among NFL teams. Given the intense pressure of the New York market, that concern could be even more significant for the Giants.

Schwartz raised an important question: “If, for instance, the Giants lose their first two games with Shedeur as the rookie starter, does Deion send missives from Boulder questioning the offensive line, a dropped pass, or the play calling? This all has to be explored as deeply as possible.”

The Giants have been thoroughly evaluating both Shedeur and Deion Sanders and will continue to do so. However, if they determine that Shedeur has the potential to be their franchise quarterback, they will likely target him with the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft—provided he is still available when they are on the clock.

Shedeur Sanders put up impressive numbers in 2024, throwing for 4,134 yards with a 37-10 TD-INT ratio. His 74.0% completion rate led the nation, and he set an FBS/Division I-A record with a career 71.8% completion percentage. However, concerns remain about his frame, the level of competition he faced, and how his game will translate to the NFL. As a result, he is widely regarded as the No. 2 quarterback in this draft class, trailing Miami’s Cam Ward.

Nevertheless, the Giants remain highly interested in Shedeur Sanders. The next couple of months will be critical in their evaluation process as they meet with him at the NFL Scouting Combine and host him for a Top-30 visit.
