Major Breaking: Astros and the Red Sox finalize a $120 million, 3-year contract For Their Main Man

Alex Bregman has signed a lucrative 3-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox, which includes a $5 million signing bonus, a $35 million salary for this season, and $40 million for each of the next two years, with some of the money deferred. Bregman also has opt-out clauses after the 2025 and 2026 seasons, allowing him to become a free agent again.

Bregman is likely to transition from third base to second base for the Red Sox, as they already have All-Star Rafael Devers at third.

Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story praised the move, saying, “A huge addition… a guy that’s won, brings a certain amount of intensity to our clubhouse and some leadership.” Story, who had considered joining the Astros before signing with Boston, shared how he had recruited Bregman to Boston after Bregman had once tried to recruit him to Houston.

Bregman took batting practice, fielded grounders, and signed autographs at his first appearance with the team. The Red Sox will introduce him formally at a news conference on Sunday.

To make room on the roster, the Red Sox placed left-hander Patrick Sandoval on the 60-day injured list while he recovers from UCL surgery.

Bregman, a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion with the Astros, is coming off a down year offensively, hitting .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs. Despite a challenging season, he won his first Gold Glove and has accumulated 19 postseason home runs, ranking sixth in MLB history. He was drafted second overall by the Astros in the 2015 MLB Draft and debuted the following year. Bregman’s best seasons came in 2018 and 2019 when he finished fifth in AL MVP voting in 2018 and second in 2019. He had career-high numbers in both years, including 41 home runs and 112 RBIs in 2019.

Over his nine-year career, Bregman has a .272 batting average, 191 home runs, and 663 RBIs.
