Good News: Virginia Tech Lands Home Another Top Experienced Veteran To Boost Their Rising Depth

The Hokies have chosen an experienced FBS coach to take over as the school’s new offensive coordinator.

Virginia Tech has named Philip Montgomery, former head coach at Tulsa, as the school’s new offensive coordinator, the program announced on Monday.

The hire was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Montgomery, who served as Auburn’s offensive coordinator under head coach Hugh Freeze in 2023, brings extensive experience as a play caller. In addition to his role at Auburn, he has coached several notable quarterbacks, including Robert Griffin III and Bryce Petty at Baylor, as well as Case Keenum and Kevin Kolb at Houston while serving as the quarterbacks coach.

Virginia Tech has hired former Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery as the school's new offensive coordinator.

Most recently, Montgomery was the offensive coordinator for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL.

At 53, Montgomery replaces Tyler Bowen, who left his position as Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator earlier this month to become the offensive line coach at Ohio State.
