Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is expected to become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season. For the third year in a row, a major baseball star will hit the market, following Shohei Ohtani in 2024 and Juan Soto this offseason.
Guerrero is projected to sign a $427 million deal, which will limit his potential suitors to only a few teams. FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently named the New York Mets as a top contender for Guerrero, with the possibility of pairing him with Juan Soto in a stunning turn of events.
Kline pointed out that Steve Cohen, the wealthiest owner in MLB, has significant influence, and when he wants a player, the Mets are hard to outbid. Despite speculation that Soto favored a return to the Yankees and showed interest in Boston and Toronto, Cohen’s financial resources and personal approach led to Soto inking a historic $765 million deal with the Mets.

Pete Alonso re-signed with the Mets this winter, but he’s likely to opt out of his contract, opening the door for Guerrero to take over at first base. With the Mets’ financial power, they’re not constrained by past signings. After a surprising NLCS run, New York is fully committed to contending, and the team is focused on building a long-term dynasty.
Even after securing Soto’s massive contract, the Mets will have the means to pursue Guerrero in 2026. While it may seem unlikely for them to commit another half-billion dollars to a player so soon after signing Soto, it remains a real possibility for a team aiming to dominate the league for the next decade.
