Just In: Atlanta Braves Announced The Return of Their Prodigal Top Star After Series Of Failed….

If you’ve been following the Atlanta Braves for any significant time, you probably have some strong opinions about which opposing players to dislike. Bryce Harper is a popular target for many fans due to his cocky demeanor, his long history in the Braves’ division, and his undeniable talent. Pete Alonso also ranks high on the list, with Atlanta fans relishing the chance to boo him at every opportunity. However, few opponents have reached the level of animosity that Jose Ureña has.

Although Ureña hasn’t been a major player in recent years, that wasn’t always the case. Back in 2018, after Ronald Acuña Jr. went on a tear against the Marlins, Ureña took matters into his own hands, intentionally hitting Acuña with a pitch, which led to a heated altercation between the two teams.

The aftermath of the incident was immediate. Thankfully, Acuña Jr. avoided serious injury and went on to win NL Rookie of the Year, while Ureña remained unapologetic and was suspended for his actions. He also earned a permanent spot on Braves fans’ enemy list, which is notable now that the Mets have signed him to a minor league deal.

Mets’ Failed Offseason Pitching Plans Lead to Braves’ Rival Ureña’s Return

Miami Marlins v Atlanta Braves

Looking at this move objectively, it’s honestly embarrassing for the Mets that they have to turn to someone like Ureña in the first place. From 2019 to 2024, Ureña posted an average 5.09 ERA over 119 appearances, struggling with both ineffectiveness and injuries. Unfortunately for New York, injuries to Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea in their rotation have left them scrambling to cover innings in less-than-ideal ways.

Aside from getting another chance to laugh at the Mets, Ureña’s presence is sure to intensify what is already one of MLB’s most heated rivalries. While there’s no guarantee Ureña will make the Mets’ roster—he’s not exactly good and they have other options—don’t think for a second that the Braves or their fans have forgotten what he did, even if it was years ago.

One can only hope that this signing actually matters. Baseball is more exciting with real, deserving villains to root against. The Mets are already an easy target, and their signing of Juan Soto only raises the stakes. If the Braves and Mets are both still in contention and Ureña is on the mound, expect some serious fireworks.
