Former South Carolina assistant Steve Spurrier Jr. returns to the Florida Gators in a support role. With over 20 years of coaching experience, including a decade at South Carolina, Spurrier Jr. brings a wealth of knowledge back to Gainesville.
Spurrier Jr. spent more than a decade at South Carolina from 2005 to 2015, working alongside his father. During that period, he played a vital role in developing some of the Gamecocks’ most notable receivers, including Alshon Jeffery, Deebo Samuel, Pharoh Cooper, Sidney Rice, and Kenny McKinley. His duties in Columbia included serving as wide receivers coach, passing game coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and co-offensive coordinator.
While he is known as the son of the legendary Florida coach Steve Spurrier, Spurrier Jr. also has his own ties to Florida’s offensive staff, having previously worked with quarterbacks coach Ryan O’Hara at Arizona in 2004. He will now team up with O’Hara in the quarterbacks room and take on various responsibilities within the program.
Before returning to Florida, Spurrier spent the last two seasons at Tulsa as offensive coordinator and associate head coach. Under his guidance, Tulsa’s offense ranked in the top 35 nationally in several categories, including rushing, red zone efficiency, third-down conversions, and passing yards per completion. However, after head coach Kevin Wilson was dismissed in November, new head coach Tre Lamb chose a different direction, hiring Brad Robbins as offensive coordinator.
Now back in Gainesville, Spurrier Jr. will aim to bring his offensive expertise and experience to Billy Napier’s staff as the Gators continue to build for the future.
