The 22-year-old forward for the Detroit Red Wings sustained an upper-body injury during the first period of Thursday night’s game against Utah.
Earlier that day, Mazur had been called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. A native of Jackson, Michigan, he was selected by Detroit in the third round of the 2021 NHL Draft.
This season, he recorded 15 points in 20 games with the Griffins, including 11 in his last 11 AHL appearances. Mazur was previously sidelined with an upper-body injury from October 19 to January 18.
A large group of family and friends gathered at Little Caesars Arena to support him in his NHL debut, and before the game, he tossed a puck over the boards to his mother.
To make room for Mazur, Detroit placed veteran forward Christian Fischer on waivers. Mazur logged 1:10 of ice time on the fourth line alongside Tyler Motte and Jonatan Berggren.
“Growing up as a Red Wings fan and seeing their success and how much the fans love the playoffs, it’s something I hope to be a part of,” Mazur said after the morning skate. “I want to help the team keep moving in the right direction. They’re already on the right path, so it’s awesome to join them during this push.”
