“Tigers Sign José Urquidy to One-Year Deal with Club Option for 2026”
The Detroit Tigers have secured right-handed pitcher José Urquidy on a one-year, $1 million contract, which includes a club option for the 2026 season. The team made the announcement on Saturday.
Urquidy, who turns 30 on May 1, is recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent on June 5. This is the second time he has had the procedure, having previously undergone it in 2017.
The club option for 2026 is worth $4 million, with Urquidy eligible for up to $3 million in performance bonuses based on games started. Bonuses are tied to milestones starting at four games and going up to 28 starts, with increasing amounts for each achievement.

As he continues his rehabilitation from elbow surgery, Urquidy has been placed on the 60-day injured list. The Tigers also placed right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 60-day IL.
Urquidy made his major league debut with the Houston Astros in 2019. Over the course of his career, he has posted a 27-16 record with a 3.98 ERA across 70 starts and nine relief appearances. Notably, Urquidy has pitched in three World Series, winning the championship with the Astros in 2022.
He was limited to 16 appearances in 2023 because of a right shoulder injury. He missed all of last season after he went on the IL in spring training with a right forearm strain.
