Gleyber Torres Snubbed by Yankees Brass, But Fans Give Him a Warm Return to Steinbrenner Field

Gleyber Torres’ exit from the New York Yankees was marked by disagreements over positional changes and a strained relationship with the team’s management. However, his return to George M. Steinbrenner Field this week as a member of the Detroit Tigers was met with a far warmer reception than expected.

“I was a little surprised by the fans,” Torres told the New York Post. “They welcomed me really good. I know everybody there. So, it’s fun. When asked if he felt unwanted in New York, Torres pointed to Yankees GM Brian Cashman, saying, “Maybe you ask him,” referencing their strained relationship. Torres admitted to feeling undervalued by the Yankees, especially after they pushed him to change positions—a move he was reluctant to make. In December 2024, Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Detroit Tigers. Now, as he embarks on a fresh journey with the Tigers, Torres is focused on proving himself both defensively and offensively. Although he remains close with his former Yankees teammates, Torres is committed to his new role as second baseman for Detroit.
