Salter is looking to sling it with the Buffs
New Colorado quarterback Kaidon Salter kicked off spring practice with a clear goal: to showcase his ability to throw the football.
Salter, a transfer from Liberty and the 2023 C-USA Player of the Year, became one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks. In 2023, his rushing ability kept defenses on edge, as he ran for 1,089 yards and 12 touchdowns, while also passing for 2,876 yards and 32 touchdowns.
In 2024, Salter worked with Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell to focus more on becoming a traditional quarterback, reducing his reliance on running and increasing his passing. This shift led to a drop in his stats, with him passing for 1,886 yards and rushing for only 587 yards.
At his first media appearance of the season, Salter emphasized that his goal is to continue evolving as a pass-first quarterback, though he’ll still use his legs when necessary.

“My rushing will still be part of my game, but mainly, I came here to throw the ball,” Salter said. “I’ll use my legs when needed, but I came to throw. We have a lot of dynamic receivers here.”
Salter also highlighted the impact of Buffaloes offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur in his decision to come to Colorado. Salter pointed to Shurmur’s success in developing Shedeur Sanders into an NFL-ready quarterback as a key factor in his commitment.
“Pat Shurmur is one of the best offensive coordinators and quarterback coaches in the country,” Salter said. “The passing yards Shedeur [Sanders] put up last year, his completion percentage, and all his accomplishments were a huge factor in my decision to come here.”
During spring ball, Salter will compete with five-star freshman Julian “Juju” Lewis for the starting quarterback spot in 2025. To secure the job, Salter’s progression as a passer will be crucial.
Fans will get a chance to witness the quarterback battle between Lewis and Salter firsthand at the Buffaloes’ spring game on April 19.
