FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys are moving forward with their major roster overhaul, and truthfully, DeMarcus Lawrence parting ways with “America’s Team” after the 2024 season was always part of the plan.
Could he reunite with former Dallas assistant coach Dan Quinn by signing with the Washington Commanders? Or might he land in the AFC, reducing the chances of facing the Cowboys in the future?
Ultimately, it’s the Seattle Seahawks who are prying DeMarcus Lawrence away from the Dallas Cowboys.
After 11 seasons with the Cowboys, “Tank” is cashing in, signing a three-year deal with the Seahawks worth up to $42 million, including $18 million guaranteed.
That $18 million guarantee far exceeds anything Dallas was ever going to offer.
By joining Seattle, Lawrence reunites with his former defensive line coach, Aden Durde, now the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator, who coached him in Dallas from 2021 to 2023.
But at the end of the day, this decision comes down to money.
The Cowboys were never going to spend that kind of money on an 11-year veteran, especially one who hit free agency for less than a day after earning $20 million annually on his previous deal.
We knew he had a specific number in mind, as his agent, David Canter, mentioned that the Cowboys were aware of “the number that gets it done.”
And we also know that Tank wanted to stay in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where he and his family have lived since he was drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
But as Lawrence put it, “I’m going to have other options, but I’d like to stay here. It would be a glorious thing.”
“Glorious” is now happening in Seattle, where the Seahawks are betting that the foot injury that sidelined him for most of 2024—and the fact that he turns 33 at the end of April—won’t hold him back.
D-Law brings a boost to the pass rush while also selflessly contributing against the run. Ultimately, this was a tough emotional decision for the Cowboys to move on—and surely just as emotional for Lawrence to leave.
