Contract details revealed for new Pittsburgh Steelers running back

The contract details for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ new running back, Kenneth Gainwell, have been disclosed. He has signed a one-year deal worth $1.79 million, a relatively inexpensive contract that suggests he’ll take over the role of the team’s third running back.

Gainwell anticipates not only handling third-down duties but also serving as the team’s kick returner, potentially replacing Cordarrelle Patterson in that capacity.

Previously, Gainwell was part of the Super Bowl-winning Eagles, serving as the third-down back, particularly when they kept Saquon Barkley off the field. The Eagles may have let him go as they believe they have a suitable replacement ready to step in.

In 2024, Gainwell rushed for just 290 yards on 75 carries, but his value was enhanced by his receiving skills and ability to protect the quarterback.

He recorded 16 receptions for 116 yards, showcasing his versatility as an all-around back. Gainwell spent his entire career with the Eagles after they drafted him from Memphis.

With the Steelers needing running back depth following Najee Harris’s move to the Los Angeles Chargers, Gainwell provides valuable veteran experience behind Jaylen Warren. While the team may seek a rookie through the NFL Draft, Gainwell offers much-needed depth.
