PITTSBURGH – Former Steelers offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum has agreed to a contract extension with the Arizona Cardinals.
Beachum has appeared in 179 career games, with 161 starts. During his time with the Steelers, he played in 44 games, starting 39 of them.
After playing college football at SMU, Beachum was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Beachum spent four seasons with the Steelers before entering free agency following the 2015 season.
In 2016, Beachum joined the Jacksonville Jaguars for a one-year stint before signing with the New York Jets in 2017, where he spent the next three seasons.
In 2020, the Cardinals brought in Beachum as a free agent and have since re-signed him to multiple short-term contracts.
Beachum’s signing with the Cardinals affects the Steelers, who have a clear need for depth on the offensive line. His veteran presence would have provided valuable leadership to Pittsburgh’s young unit, and without him, the team may face challenges with discipline and consistency as the season progresses.
That being said, concerns about Beachum’s size have followed him since his collegiate Pro Day, and at 35 years old, his age is a factor for any NFL player. His signing with the Cardinals will likely serve to provide stability to their offensive line above all else.
