Earlier this offseason, the Houston Astros made a significant move by signing Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker in free agency.
Walker was considered one of the most underrated free agents available, and Houston secured him with a three-year, $60 million contract. However, just as spring training was starting, Walker suffered a mild oblique injury.
Fortunately, an MRI showed no strain, which relieved the city of Houston. Despite this, Walker has yet to return to the field, and there has been some uncertainty about whether he will be ready for opening day.
Astros beat writer Chandler Rome recently shared some positive news, with Astros manager Joe Espada expressing optimism: “I’m confident he should be fine for opening day.” Having Walker back in the lineup would be a significant boost for the Astros.

He is expected to be a key middle-of-the-order hitter after a strong 2023 season, where he hit .251/.335/.468 with 26 home runs and 26 doubles. He improved further in 2023, posting 33 home runs, 36 doubles, and an OPS of .830.
Beyond his offensive contributions, Walker is also regarded as one of the best first baseman defenders in the league, having won three Gold Glove awards. The Astros’ $60 million investment in Walker reflects their confidence in his ability to contribute significantly to their team, and his return to the field would provide a major lift.
