The Boston Red Sox have experienced an eventful offseason, making several key acquisitions, including Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to strengthen their starting rotation. They also signed superstar infielder Alex Bregman.
However, the signings of Crochet and Buehler might be the most crucial, especially after a series of injuries. Three of their starting pitchers — Kutter Crawford, Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito — are all sidelined and won’t be available to start the season.
This situation could lead Boston to explore the trade market to add another starter. Recently, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer proposed a major trade that would bring Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara to the Red Sox in a three-player exchange.
Here’s the full trade proposal suggested by Rymer:
Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Sandy Alcántara
Miami Marlins receive: RF Wilyer Abreu, SS Franklin Arias (Red Sox No. 4 prospect)
Rymer noted that the Red Sox are already facing injury challenges with Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Lucas Giolito expected to start the season on the injured list. Additionally, newcomers Crochet and Buehler are not particularly known for their durability. “This is just one reason to keep an eye on Boston as a potential player for Alcántara,” Rymer wrote. “The other is that the team has more young bats than it has space for, something the Marlins would probably be happy to help with.”
While Boston may seem like an ideal landing spot for the star pitcher, Rymer believes this trade might not be enough to secure Alcántara. The Marlins ace is a Cy Young-caliber pitcher with three years of cost-controlled service left on his contract. To acquire him, the Red Sox would likely need to offer additional top-tier prospects, probably including at least one pitcher, to convince Miami to trade their ace.
