Virginia Tech gets worst news possible heading into Selection Sunday

The Hokies are in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament.

In the 10 days leading up to Selection Sunday, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team’s NCAA Tournament hopes were tied to the outcomes of the remaining conference tournaments. This weekend, all eyes were on the Ivy League Tournament, where the Hokies needed Columbia to win instead of Harvard or Princeton.

On Friday night, Harvard narrowly defeated Princeton, 70-67, to advance to the championship game against top-seeded Columbia. With their spot in the title game secured, Harvard ensured they would hear their name called on Selection Sunday, upsetting Columbia 74-71 to earn the conference’s automatic bid. Now, the only remaining question at selection time is whether Virginia Tech or Princeton will claim the 68th and final spot.

Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball Facing NCAA Tournament Uncertainty

As Selection Sunday approaches, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team is anxiously waiting to see if they’ll make the NCAA Tournament. According to Charlie Creme of ESPN, the big question for the selection committee is whether they’ll give the Ivy League three bids or if Virginia Tech will secure the final spot. Columbia is already in, regardless of Saturday night’s result, and with Harvard claiming the automatic bid, the focus now shifts to whether Princeton’s résumé is stronger than Virginia Tech’s.

Creme has noted that this season’s bubble is weaker than in years past, which has worked in Virginia Tech’s favor. However, with an 18-12 record, the Hokies only need to look back to February to understand why they might miss out. Losses to Syracuse, Stanford, and Boston College—especially the two losses at home to Syracuse and Stanford—hurt their chances. A win in even one of those games would have likely locked them into the tournament.

So, is Virginia Tech a tournament team? On paper, yes, but their recent struggles have made their case much weaker. For what it’s worth, Creme has Princeton getting the nod over Virginia Tech. The decision will be revealed shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday night.
