Another Disappointment as Steelers’ Failed Attempt at Signing $40 Million Quarterback Revealed

The quarterback situation for the Pittsburgh Steelers is unclear heading into the 2025 season, with only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson currently on the roster. This comes after the team lost Russell Wilson, who is now a free agent, and Justin Fields, who chose to sign a two-year, $40 million deal with the New York Jets.

However, ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler shared on “The Dan Patrick Show” that the Steelers did make an effort to re-sign Fields, but ultimately were unsuccessful. “A week or a week and a half ago, they put together a very competitive offer for Justin Fields, which was similar to what the Jets offered him, nearly two years, $40 million with $30 million guaranteed,” he explained.

“But something went wrong, and he decided to go with the Jets, likely feeling more appreciated by them than by the Steelers, who had benched him last year in favor of Russell Wilson.”

Jets Sign Free Agent QB Justin Fields to Two-Year Deal

Fields did have a productive season for the Steelers in 2024, appearing in 10 games with six starts, completing 106-of-161 passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, one intrception and a 93.3 passer rating.

Between that, and his ability to run the ball, gaining 289 yards and five touchdowns, he led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record to open the season, until eventually being replaced by a healthy WIlson the rest of the year.

With Fields now out of the picture, and WIlson visiting with other teams, the Steelers have turned their attention to free-agent Aaron Rodgers, who has also received interest from the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants.
