Breaking: Syracuse Top Experienced Veteran Found A New Home With Rivals

Senior quarterback Justin Lamson has confirmed his decision to transfer to Montana State, as reported by 406 MT Sports on Tuesday.

The news was initially broken by ESPN.

“Montana State is appealing to me because Coach (Brent) Vigen has built something strong there, and they’re always a contender for the national title,” Lamson shared with ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, Lamson joins the Bobcats about two months after transferring from Stanford to Bowling Green, when Scot Loeffler was still the head coach there. Loeffler left last month to become the quarterbacks coach for the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles, and Bowling Green recently hired Eddie George (formerly of Tennessee State, which ended its 2024 season with an FCS playoff loss to Montana).

Lamson reentered the transfer portal a few days ago.

He began his college career at Syracuse in 2021, where he spent two seasons without appearing in a game. After the 2022 season, Lamson transferred to Stanford, where he played for two years, completing 62 of 135 passes (45.9%) for 804 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 428 yards and 13 touchdowns on 188 carries (2.28 yards per carry) in 24 appearances, including four starts with the Cardinal.

Lamson, a three-star recruit from Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, California, received an offer from Montana State in May 2020, when Jeff Choate was head coach. He also received an offer from Wyoming, where Vigen was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the time. Vigen succeeded Choate at MSU in early 2021.

Lamson will compete with four quarterbacks already on the Bobcats’ 2024 roster: backup Chance Wilson, third-stringer Jordan Reed, and reserves Thomas Buchanan and Patrick Duchien. Additionally, MSU signed two high school quarterbacks in December: River Warren and Grant Vigen, Brent Vigen’s son.

Tommy Mellott, the senior quarterback for MSU last season, won the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year) and helped lead the Bobcats to the FCS title game.
