Chargers warned to avoid ‘disastrous’ blockbuster trade for superstar WR

The Los Angeles Chargers are being warned to avoid a massive trade for this superstar wide receiver.

The LA Chargers have remained fairly low-key compared to other teams with significant cap space and a legitimate shot at contending for a Super Bowl in 2025. While Los Angeles has made several moves, they’ve mostly been minor, with no major moves so far this offseason.

However, the Chargers are in a position to make a big trade if they believe it’s worth it. They still have the cap room to make a major deal, both for 2025 and in the years ahead.

The LA Chargers have kept a relatively low profile compared to other teams with cap space and a strong chance of contending for a Super Bowl in 2025. Although they’ve made several moves, they’ve all been small, with no major trades so far this offseason.

Nevertheless, the Chargers are still in a position to pull off a blockbuster deal if they find it worthwhile. They have enough cap space to make a significant trade, both for 2025 and beyond.

Not every big trade is a good idea.

While big trades can be exciting, they also have the potential to be more harmful than helpful, depending on the player involved. Pro Football Focus (PFF) believes the Chargers should go after Tyreek Hill, but this could end up being a mistake.

Mason Cameron of PFF connected four star veterans to different teams and suggested the Chargers trade for Hill. Speculation about Hill joining the Chargers has been around before, so it’s not a completely new idea.

“Despite finishing with the lowest PFF receiving grade (77.3) of his career in 2024, Hill is still one of the NFL’s most dynamic weapons. Over the last three seasons, Hill has ranked in the 92nd percentile for receiving grade and the 99th percentile for yards per route run,” Cameron wrote. “Paired with Ladd McConkey, this Chargers receiving corps could become a terrifying group with Herbert slinging the ball.”

However, trading for Tyreek Hill could prove to be a disastrous move. While Cameron highlights Hill’s impressive numbers from the past few seasons, they are largely bolstered by his performance in 2022 and 2023, not 2024. Hill wasn’t as dominant last season, and although he wasn’t bad, he didn’t have the same field-changing impact as before.

Looking at the yards-per-route-run stat over a three-year period paints a strong picture, but when focusing on just 2024, the numbers are less impressive. Hill ranked 35th in yards per route run out of 110 receivers who ran at least 201 routes last season. For context, Quentin Johnston ranked 30th.

This comparison doesn’t mean Johnston is a better receiver than Hill, but it does show that Hill is past his prime. Trading for him would be a classic case of the Chargers paying a premium for past performance, which is not typically how this front office operates.
