Syracuse Fans Breathe Easy As They Received Another Hard-nosed Commitment News

Syracuse, N.Y. — Darnell Stokes Jr., a wide receiver and defensive back on Delaware’s Class 1A state championship football team, has verbally committed to join the Syracuse football program.

According to Rivals, Stokes has received offers from Rutgers, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and several smaller schools. He is not currently ranked by the four major recruiting sites. Stokes stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds.

He made his commitment public on X (formerly Twitter), describing himself as a three-sport athlete and mentioning that he has run the 100 meters in 10.8 seconds.

Stokes becomes the 11th verbal commitment for Syracuse’s Class of 2026.

He plays for Indian River in Dagsboro. According to MaxPreps.com, Stokes caught 24 passes for 639 yards, averaging 26.6 yards per catch, and scored 12 receiving touchdowns.

On the ground, he was just as effective, rushing 48 times for 593 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named Offensive Player of the Year in his class size.

His team finished the season 12-1 and claimed the state championship in a thrilling 47-45 victory. Stokes scored four touchdowns in the state championship game.

Defensively, he recorded 50 tackles and an interception. 247 Sports lists him as a wide receiver, while Rivals classifies him as an athlete.
