Bleachers’ Report: Chargers Encouraged to Trade for $120 Million Top-Notch Receiver From a Good Team

The NFL’s free agency period is almost two weeks in, and teams are starting to finalize their rosters. Most of the major signings have already taken place, so any teams hoping to add significant contributors will likely need to focus on the draft or explore trade options. For the Los Angeles Chargers, the wide receiver position was a major concern last season, as the team struggled to get consistent production from anyone other than rookie Ladd McConkey.

While it was anticipated that the team would look for reinforcements in free agency, the only addition to the receiving corps has been Mike Williams, who seems to be past his prime. As a result, the Chargers’ best opportunity to add another wide receiver likely lies in the draft. However, a recent article proposes that the team consider pursuing a trade to enhance their outside receiving game.

Moe Moton of Bleacher Report suggested that the Los Angeles Chargers should consider trading for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The former first-round pick actually requested a trade from the 49ers last year amid a contract dispute. While he eventually secured a contract extension, his performance was disappointing, with less than 400 yards through seven games before suffering a torn ACL.

Despite that setback, Aiyuk had a breakout season the year before, recording over 1,300 yards and seven touchdowns. His talent is undeniable when he’s on the field, but he has struggled with consistent production in the NFL. Aiyuk’s quarterback, Brock Purdy, has faced criticism since becoming the starter. Though Purdy played at a high level in his first two seasons, there were doubts about his true ability due to the strength of San Francisco’s roster.

Purdy’s performance last year, with many of the 49ers’ stars injured, didn’t help quiet those concerns. Aiyuk could potentially elevate his game by teaming up with the Chargers’ star quarterback, Justin Herbert. However, there’s been little indication that San Francisco is willing to part with their star receiver, and even if they were, it’s unlikely the Chargers would pursue the trade.

They already turned down a trade for DK Metcalf earlier this offseason and passed on opportunities to sign Davante Adams or Cooper Kupp due to the financial commitment involved. Aiyuk will be entering the second year of a four-year, $120 million contract, and it’s unlikely the Chargers would want to take on that salary. Although Los Angeles missed out on several top receivers earlier in the offseason, they can still address the position in the upcoming draft, which boasts a deep 2025 class.
