The Pittsburgh Steelers are claiming former New England Patriots offensive lineman Lecitus Smith off waivers after he was released by the Patriots on Friday. Smith was originally claimed off the practice squad by the Green Bay Packers mid-season.
A 2022 sixth-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals, Smith has had a journeyman start to his NFL career, playing for the Cardinals, Packers, Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, and Houston Texans over his first three seasons.
Smith has appeared in 18 games and started three, including one last year as a jumbo tight end in the Patriots’ offense, a role he took on late in the season. He has also played guard and center, showcasing his versatility as a three-position player.
After logging over 200 snaps in his rookie season, Smith hasn’t played more than 50 snaps in any season since. Now with the Steelers, he’ll compete for a spot on the offensive line, where depth is needed. He’ll likely challenge Spencer Anderson and Ryan McCollum for playing time, while Mason McCormick and Isaac Seumalo are expected to remain the starting options.
