The Detroit Lions continue to add more cornerbacks to their roster.
They kicked off free agency by locking in a CB1 for the next few seasons, but the position remained quiet for a short time afterward.
That changed yesterday when the Lions added former 49ers corner Rock Ya-Sin and brought back Khalil Dorsey on a new deal.
Now, they’ve taken another step to strengthen their cornerback group.
Former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox’s girlfriend revealed on her Instagram (via The Detroit Times) that he is set to join the Lions.
Maddox, a Detroit native, will be playing outside of Pennsylvania for the first time in quite a while.
He played college football for the Pitt Panthers before spending seven seasons in the NFL with the Eagles, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2018.
Maddox was a reliable contributor for the Eagles throughout his tenure. As a slot corner, he played at least 65% of the team’s defensive snaps in each of his first five seasons.
He missed most of the 2023 season due to injury. In 2024, his defensive playing time dropped to just 33% of snaps, but he took on a significantly larger role on special teams.
Now, he’ll return to his hometown to join a cornerback group that has become increasingly crowded in recent weeks.
He’ll provide the Lions with depth at slot corner and bring valuable championship experience for the young roster to rely on.
He’s yet another solid veteran addition for the Lions as they keep shaping their roster.
