For the second consecutive season, the Pittsburgh Steelers will have a completely revamped quarterback group. After reshaping their roster in 2024 by parting ways with Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitch Trubisky, they’re undergoing another overhaul this offseason.
This year, Kyle Allen, Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields have moved on to other teams. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has Skylar Thompson and Mason Rudolph under contract as they continue their pursuit of Aaron Rodgers.
Pittsburgh is set to have its fifth different starting quarterback in five years, a distinction shared only with the Atlanta Falcons. This trend highlights the team’s struggles in developing and evaluating the position, especially considering they invested a first-round pick on a quarterback during this span.
If the Steelers sign someone like Aaron Rodgers, it would all but guarantee a sixth consecutive season with a different starting quarterback. Such frequent turnover makes it difficult for the team to establish continuity or a clear identity, even with steady figures like Mike Tomlin in place.
This is why it’s more crucial than ever for the Steelers to identify a true franchise quarterback. However, they don’t appear to see the 2025 NFL Draft as the solution, meaning the search may be delayed another year. Regardless, Pittsburgh must find a way out of its current quarterback carousel, and the best path to stability remains through the draft.
