PHOENIX (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks bolstered their bullpen ahead of Opening Day on Wednesday, signing left-hander Jalen Beeks to a one-year, $1.25 million contract and adding veteran right-hander Shelby Miller to the roster.
The 31-year-old Beeks pitched for both the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates last season, making 71 appearances with a 4.50 ERA. He was recently released by Houston from a minor league deal after three outings in spring training.
The 34-year-old Miller joined camp as a non-roster invitee and earned a spot on the Opening Day roster after an impressive spring, recording 11 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Miller will earn a $1 million salary while in the majors this season and $200,000 if assigned to the minors. His contract also includes performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 10 and 15 appearances, $100,000 for reaching 20, 30, 35, 40, and 45 outings, and $150,000 for 50.
This marks Miller’s second tenure with the Diamondbacks. His first stint from 2016 to 2018 was underwhelming after Arizona acquired him in a trade that sent Ender Inciarte and former No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson to Atlanta.
Arizona moved left-hander Jordan Montgomery to the 60-day injured list due to an elbow injury that will likely require Tommy John surgery. Meanwhile, catcher René Pinto was designated for assignment.
