Steelers Urged to Acquire $132 Million Quarterback Amid Aaron Rodgers Free Agency Controversy

As NFL free agency drags on, quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ options continue to shrink, particularly after the New York Giants signed Russell Wilson to a one-year, $10.5 million deal. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero also reported that the Minnesota Vikings are no longer pursuing Rodgers, leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers as one of the few teams still interested in the 41-year-old quarterback.

However, Rodgers could choose to retire rather than sign with any team due to the ongoing uncertainty. In light of this, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report is recommending that the Steelers explore other options and sign free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz instead. “If begging Aaron Rodgers to make up his mind doesn’t work, sign Carson Wentz,” Moton suggested.

Carson Wentz's next team after the Chiefs couldn't be clearer

The last time Carson Wentz served as a full-time starter was in 2021 with the Indianapolis Colts, where he posted solid numbers, completing 322 of 516 passes for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and a 94.6 passer rating. However, since then, he has played for three different teams, appearing in 13 games, with his performance significantly declining. Over that span, he completed 201 of 319 passes for 2,036 yards, 13 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and an 81.7 passer rating.

Wentz could at least compete for a starting role with Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson, the Steelers’ only other quarterbacks heading into 2025. Additionally, he’s a budget-friendly option, with Spotrac estimating his market value at just $1.9 million annually, a small fraction of his $132.7 million career earnings.
