BLOCKBUSTER DEAL: Tigers Acquire Superstar Shortstop From Cardinals In 5 Player Trade

*Tigers Acquire Left-Handed Pitcher Bailey Horn from Cardinals*

The Detroit Tigers have announced the acquisition of left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for cash considerations. This move marks the second stint with the Tigers for Horn, who was previously claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox in November, only to be designated for assignment a month later.

Horn, 27, has had a journeyman’s career thus far, being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB June Amateur Draft. He has since been traded to the Chicago Cubs, back to the White Sox, and then to the Boston Red Sox, before being designated for assignment by the Cardinals.

Despite struggling with command at the big-league level, Horn has shown promise in the minor leagues. In 2024, he pitched well for Triple-A Worcester, striking out 35 in 29 innings while posting a 2.15 ERA. However, his struggles with command persisted at the MLB level, walking 10 and striking out 13 in 18 innings with the Red Sox.

Horn will report to Triple-A Toledo and will not participate in big-league camp or compete for an Opening Day roster spot. The Tigers’ 40-man roster is now at its maximum capacity of 40 players.

The Tigers’ pitching staff has undergone significant changes this offseason, with the addition of several new arms. Horn’s acquisition provides additional depth and competition for the team’s pitching corps.

Here is the updated Tigers’ 40-man roster:

– Left-handed pitchers (5): Sean Guenther, Tyler Holton, Bailey Horn, Brant Hurter, Tarik Skubal
– Right-handed pitchers (18): John Brebbia, Beau Brieske, Alex Cobb, Jack Flaherty, Jason Foley, Brenan Hanifee, Jackson Jobe, Tommy Kahnle, Chase Lee, Ty Madden, Kenta Maeda, Matt Manning, Tyler Mattison, Casey Mize, Keider Montero, Reese Olson, Tyler Owens, Will Vest
– Catchers (2): Dillon Dingler, Jake Rogers

Right-handed pitchers Alex Lange, Sawyer Gipson-Long, and Jose Urquidy are currently on the 60-day injured list and do not count against the 40-man roster.
