The Montreal Canadiens are fighting for a playoff spot, but they should look to bolster their roster this offseason. One potential move being discussed involves the Canadiens acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko from the Detroit Red Wings. The proposal would see Montreal adding Tarasenko, with Detroit retaining $1.8 million of his salary, while the Red Wings would receive a 2025 third-round pick (from New Jersey) in return.
This trade could make sense for both teams. Detroit would move on from Tarasenko’s contract, while Montreal would add more offensive firepower to their lineup. Tarasenko, who signed a two-year, $9.5 million deal with the Red Wings last offseason, has struggled to fit in and has not had the impact Detroit hoped for. Montreal could take a chance on the two-time Stanley Cup champion, who could add depth as a middle-six forward and provide veteran leadership in the locker room.
Tarasenko won the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2019 and again with the Florida Panthers in 2024. This season with the Red Wings, he has recorded 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points in 70 games. If the trade were to happen, Montreal would benefit from adding a proven goal-scorer and a key presence in the locker room.
For Detroit, acquiring a third-round pick from a division rival would be a decent return, especially considering their likely absence from the playoffs. Detroit had previously looked to trade Tarasenko at the deadline but was unable to find a deal. With just one year left on his contract, they could explore trading him again in the offseason.
As for Montreal, they are currently battling for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. As of March 29, they are tied in points with the Columbus Blue Jackets but have played one more game. Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis believes that the team needs to play more structured hockey to improve their chances of making the playoffs. Montreal’s next game is on March 30 against the Florida Panthers, where they will look to build on their playoff push.
