Just in: Virginia Tech Fans Breathe Easy With The Return Of their Key Veteran To Boost their corps of Players

Chester Frazier is returning to Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball team as the associate head coach, the school announced on Tuesday morning.

Frazier takes over the position previously held by Christian Webster, who was dismissed by Mike Young on March 21 after the Hokies finished with a 13-19 record (8-12 ACC) for the season.

“We are excited to welcome Chester, along with his wife Sarah and children Chandler, Cameron, and Courtney, back to Blacksburg,” Young said in the announcement. “His passion, energy, and relentless work ethic are exactly what we need. Chester understands the culture of our program deeply, and his ability to connect with players, recruit at a high level, and develop talent will be invaluable as we move forward.”

“He has been successful everywhere he has been. I’m lucky to call Chester a close friend and I’m thrilled to work with him again.”

This marks Frazier’s second time on Young’s staff at Virginia Tech. He initially joined the Hokies in 2019 as one of Young’s first hires after he replaced Buzz Williams as head coach. Frazier came to Tech from Kansas State, where he spent seven seasons under Bruce Weber, winning two Big 12 titles and making five NCAA Tournament appearances. Young’s original coaching staff also included Antwon Jackson and Webster.

Frazier spent two years at Tech, helping lead the Hokies to a third-place finish in the ACC and a trip to the 2021 NCAA Tournament. He then moved on to Illinois, his alma mater, where he had been a two-time All-Big Ten Defensive Team selection from 2005-09 under Weber, making three NCAA Tournament appearances. He began his coaching career there as a graduate assistant in 2010-11.

As an assistant under Brad Underwood, who called him “one of the brightest young stars in the coaching profession,” Frazier helped Illinois make three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, culminating in a run to the Elite Eight in 2024. Frazier later moved to West Virginia, where he spent one year as associate head coach under Darian DeVries, helping the Mountaineers finish with a 19-13 record (10-10 Big 12). After DeVries left for Indiana, Frazier returned to Blacksburg.

“I’m extremely excited to be back at Virginia Tech,” Frazier said. “This is a special place with a passionate fan base, a strong culture, and a commitment to excellence. I’m looking forward to working with Coach Young and the entire staff again to help restore this program to where it belongs.”

A native of Baltimore, Md., Frazier is a well-regarded recruiter and coach with vast experience. The 38-year-old joins Kevin Giltner and J.D. Byers on Virginia Tech’s coaching staff. It’s possible that one or two West Virginia players may follow him to the Hokies as well.
