Breaking: Carolinas’ Strengthens depth with the Reunion Another Power-threat Fans Man

Meechie Johnson Jr., a 6-foot-2 point guard, has announced his return to the South Carolina Gamecocks men’s basketball team for the 2025–2026 season. This move comes after a brief and challenging stint back at Ohio State University during the 2024–2025 season.

Background and Career Progression

Johnson began his collegiate career at Ohio State, playing two seasons (2020–2022) where he averaged modest statistics. He then transferred to South Carolina in 2022, experiencing significant growth in his performance. In his first season with the Gamecocks, Johnson averaged 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, leading to a second-team All-SEC honor. He further elevated his game in the 2023–2024 season, posting averages of 14.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.

Seeking new challenges, Johnson transferred back to Ohio State for the 2024–2025 season. However, his time there was cut short; he played in only 10 games, averaging 9.1 points and 2.7 assists per game, before leaving the team to address personal mental health concerns. Johnson has since applied for a medical hardship waiver to gain a sixth year of eligibility.

Return to South Carolina

Assuming his waiver is approved, Johnson will rejoin the Gamecocks for the 2025–2026 season. His return is seen as a positive development for a team that finished the previous season with a 12–20 record, securing only two SEC wins. Johnson’s experience and skill set are expected to bolster South Carolina’s backcourt and contribute to the team’s efforts to improve in the upcoming season.

Player Profile

Known for his resilience and adaptability, Johnson has navigated a unique collegiate journey, transferring between two programs and overcoming personal challenges. Off the court, he maintains a close relationship with NBA star LeBron James, referring to him as an uncle.

As Johnson prepares for his final season, both he and the Gamecocks look forward to building on past experiences to achieve greater success in the 2025–2026 season.
