Russell Wilson is set to play for his fourth team in five seasons, but he’ll once again be keeping his familiar jersey number.
The former Pro Bowl quarterback announced on social media Wednesday that he will continue wearing No. 3 as a member of the New York Giants. He also thanked Giants defensive back Deonte Banks, who had worn No. 3 for the past two seasons but will switch to No. 2 in 2025.
“Salute to my guy & young star Tae Banks! Grateful for you letting me wear #3 King! Full of gratitude,” Wilson wrote on X, acknowledging Banks’ gesture in giving up the number.
Banks, a 2023 first-round pick and full-time starter for the Giants, was under no obligation to give up his number. It’s unclear whether he and Wilson made a deal to allow Wilson to wear No. 3, but Wilson’s post suggested it was simply a classy gesture from his new teammate. If that’s the case, it wouldn’t be the first time an NFL player has changed numbers out of respect for another player.
Wilson has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, and now the New York Giants. With this latest move, he’s one step closer to retirement, having only worn one jersey number throughout his entire career.
