The Detroit Lions already have one of the NFL’s most formidable wide receiver duos in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, but could they be planning an even bigger move?
A recent report from Pro Football Network suggests that the Lions could be a dark horse contender to sign free-agent wide receiver Keenan Allen. The former Chargers and Bears Pro Bowler remains unexpectedly available on the market.
Let’s be real—this would be a surprising move. Not because Allen wouldn’t be a valuable addition, but because, at least on paper, the Lions don’t appear to have a pressing need at wide receiver. However, Pro Football Network presented a strong argument:
“The logic here is simple: at the right price, if having some is good, having more is even better. The Lions are in win-now mode and will be seeking offensive stability, especially with Ben Johnson moving on to Chicago.”
That’s a fair point. With Ben Johnson out of the picture, Dan Campbell and the new offensive staff might look to equip Jared Goff with as many weapons as possible as they push to take the next step in 2025.
Still Something Left in the Tank
Despite turning 32, Allen proved in 2024 that he’s still got plenty left in the tank. Even in a challenging season with the Bears, he racked up 744 yards and seven touchdowns.
For a Lions team with a wide-open Super Bowl window, signing a dependable veteran like Allen on a short-term, team-friendly deal could be a smart move. His experience, elite route running, and reliable hands would be especially valuable in high-stakes playoff moments.
Does It Make Sense for the Lions?
Maybe. But let’s not overlook the reality: Detroit’s wide receiver depth isn’t as strong as it appears beyond St. Brown and Williams. While the duo combined for over 2,300 yards last season, the depth behind them remains largely unproven.
If Allen’s asking price drops, bringing him in could make the Lions’ receiving corps one of the most versatile and dangerous in the league. He’d also provide Goff with a reliable safety net in case of injuries or if Williams faces challenges in his third season.
Bottom Line
Don’t count it out. If Detroit wants to keep the pressure on NFC contenders and put the final pieces in place for an elite offense, Keenan Allen could be the surprise addition that takes them over the top.
