Virginia Tech secured another important commitment on Saturday, as Amani Hansberry, a forward/center from West Virginia, announced he will be transferring to join the Hokies. Hansberry, who has two years of eligibility remaining, follows his close connection with Chester Frazier, who joined Mike Young’s coaching staff as associate head coach on April 1. Hansberry first joined Frazier at Illinois, and when Frazier moved to Morgantown, Hansberry followed. Now, he’s making the move to Blacksburg with his coach once again.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward had a strong 2024-25 season at West Virginia, averaging 9.8 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per game. He also showcased his consistency, starting 24 of the 31 games he played. Hansberry shot 42.9% from the field, 29.2% from three-point range, and 75% from the free-throw line. His performance this season earned him four double-doubles, with standout games including 19-point performances against Gonzaga and Louisville in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, and a 17-point, 13-rebound game against Cincinnati.
Before transferring to West Virginia, Hansberry spent his freshman year at Illinois, where he averaged 2.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in just 7.5 minutes per game. He had a notable performance in the Elite Eight against UConn, contributing eight points in the game against the eventual national champions.

A standout player at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Maryland, Hansberry was named the 2023 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year, leading his school to a 38-4 record and back-to-back MIAA conference titles. He was ranked the No. 67 recruit nationally and the top player in Maryland according to 247Sports.
Hansberry hails from a basketball family—his mother, Angela, played at Howard University. He’s also following in the footsteps of several other Maryland natives who have played for Virginia Tech under Mike Young, including Keve Aluma, Darius Maddox, Rodney Rice, and Mekhi Long.
With Hansberry’s commitment, the Hokies now have seven scholarship players lined up for the 2025-26 season, and he brings a wealth of experience, versatility, and strong rebounding to the program.
