Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Kalon Barnes is heading north to continue his professional football journey. The speedster has signed a deal with the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL), giving him a fresh opportunity to showcase his talents after an up-and-down start to his career in the NFL and UFL.
Barnes most recently spent time with the San Antonio Brahmas during their training camp in the United Football League (UFL). However, he was released on March 20th, making him a free agent. Now, the former Baylor standout will look to revive his football career in Canada with the Elks.
The 25-year-old cornerback was waived by the Steelers in August 2023, following a stint on their practice squad. Injuries, including a quad issue suffered during training camp, limited his ability to make an impression and earn a full-time roster spot. Despite his potential, Barnes has yet to appear in a regular season NFL game.
One of Barnes’ biggest claims to fame is his blazing 4.23-second 40-yard dash, recorded at the 2022 NFL Combine. That time is the fastest ever recorded by a cornerback, and second-fastest all-time at the event, trailing only wide receiver John Ross (4.22). His raw speed made him an intriguing prospect, but technical development and injuries have slowed his progress.
A seventh-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2022 NFL Draft, Barnes quickly began a nomadic NFL career. Over the past three seasons, he has spent time with six NFL teams: the Panthers, Dolphins, Vikings, Browns, Jets, and most recently, the Steelers. Despite multiple opportunities, he has yet to crack a game-day roster.
Throughout his NFL stints, Barnes often earned practice squad opportunities thanks to his elite athleticism, but concerns over technique, coverage skills, and durability prevented him from sticking long-term with any team. His journey is one that reflects the challenges many late-round picks face when transitioning to the pro level.
Now with the Edmonton Elks, Barnes gets a reset — and a chance to translate his potential into performance on the field. The CFL’s wider field and emphasis on speed could suit his playing style well, and the Elks are clearly hoping he can bring value to their secondary.
