The Atlanta Braves are dealing with a significant void in their starting rotation following the free-agent departures of Charlie Morton and Max Fried. Adding to their challenges, Reynaldo López is sidelined with a shoulder injury, leaving the team thin on starting pitching depth.
To bolster their chances for a deep playoff push, the Braves may explore a major trade this season to strengthen their rotation depth.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently proposed that the Braves could make a major trade with the Milwaukee Brewers to acquire right-hander Aaron Civale.
Miller noted that when healthy, the trio of Spencer Strider, Chris Sale, and Spencer Schwellenbach has the potential to be something special. However, relying on a mix of Grant Holmes, AJ Smith-Shawver, and Bryce Elder to complete the rotation isn’t ideal for a team that’s struggled early in the season.
While Atlanta is expected to still be in the playoff race by late July, they will likely be looking to add at least one starting pitcher to their roster. Potential options include Nick Martinez, Andrew Heaney, and Aaron Civale.
With the Brewers facing struggles this season, there’s a strong possibility they could decide to sell at the trade deadline. If so, trading Aaron Civale would be a logical move.
The 29-year-old pitcher is in the final year of his contract and is currently recovering from an injury. He struggled in his first start of the season against the New York Yankees and has not pitched since.
If the right-hander is able to make a strong return to the mound, the Braves might look to trade for him later this season.
